In the event of a car accident, would you know what to do? On average, about 6 million car accidents are reported each year in the United States. It's an unfortunate reality that most of us will have to deal with at some point in our lives. Your insurance agent can be an excellent resource when you are faced with filing a claim due to an auto loss. Here's what you need to do after an accident:

  • Check for injuries - Take care of yourself and others.  Find out if anyone is hurt. If anyone requires emergency assistance, call 911.
  • Exchange information - share your insurance information with the other drivers involved in the accident as well as names, addresses, phone and license numbers. Write down the other vehicle's make, model and year.
  • Take Photos - get pictures of the vehicles involved, the surrounding area, damage and license plates. This documentation may help you later in the claims process.
  • File a Report - Call local law enforcement to the scene or file a police report at the nearest station. Try to obtain a copy or ask the officer who is assisting you for the report number.
  • Contact your insurance carrier -  While your insurance agent is happy to help you with questions throughout the claims process, you will need reach out to your carrier (such as MAPFRE, Norfolk & Dedham, or Geico) directly to report your claim as soon as possible.
